World Building
November 30 at 4:00 pm - 4:45 pm CST
An event every week that begins at 4:00 pm on Thursday, repeating until February 29, 2024

We developed this step-by-step approach to world-building for middle-grade students through teens. We work collaboratively during class time, learning the ins and outs of creating a fantasy world, while outside of class, each student works on their chosen project. The sky’s the limit regarding what Bookish Society students accomplish during this small group tutorial.
Middle schoolers are the best. We aim to harness all that creative energy, help them overcome their inner critics, and keep them motivated throughout the year.
Will they write a book?
Maybe? Or they may create a graphic novel or a video game script. We’re open to any storytelling. They will be proud of whatever they write if it’s 200 or 20,000 words long. Something will happen if you take a whole class of kids and soak them in creativity for a school year. It might not be what you expected, but chances are good that it will be awesome!
Does creative writing help improve ELA scores?
Yes! Students develop writing fluency by working daily on a project that matters to them. Practicing anything will ultimately lead to improved scores.
How do you teach novel writing?
We focus on the world-building aspects and let the actual novel writing happen when that individual student is ready to begin. It’s okay if they write only a little beyond random story sections in their mind.
